TYB Books -- Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan was my childhood hero. He was the last one still alive, and needless to say I was shocked and dismayed by his ill-starred death. Now all my heroes are dead. All any of us have left are reruns of Cosmos, and the rest of his life's work. Cosmos came out on PBS when I was just 8. Since it was about then that I really got into astronomy, I can only guess that Cosmos had something to do with it. Astronomy was such a part of my life I was determined to pursue it academically. I still regret leaving it, and keep hedging my bets about one day going back to it. I am so much better at linguistics than physics, but when Carl Sagan died the very night I mailed my applications for grad school in linguistics, you can imagine what I was thinking, even though, like him, I don't really believe in such nonsense. Still, I felt like I betrayed him. It's no wonder I'm confused. And then, to have nearly had a chance to meet him at this fancy black-tie dinner when I was in Washington when Shoemaker-Levy 9 smashed into Jupiter and not having the guts to go say 'hello'.... Oh the agony of it! Presidents and teen idols never phased me as much as my admiration for Carl Sagan. So, I've put together this page. In part because it provides me with a convenient list of links to the books I don't have, and websites for when I want to wallow in my sorrow, but also because I don't want people to forget everything that Carl Sagan meant for the generations that remember him, and a resource for parents that want to share Carl's joy of science with their own kids. In any case, please feel free to let me know about any other websites or Carl Sagan-related stuff I ought to have posted here. I'll even take personal stories of Carl's influence on your life. Just e-mail them to me at templebattlestrong@tripod.com. In the meantime, enjoy.

Vicariously,
Like most of the world,
I met Carl Sagan when I was in the 2nd
grade.
What wonders he showed!
But those were only justification
To a child already captured by the
stars.
The joy is painful!
A friendless little girl.
A brilliant man doing what we
love.
He was my hero, my model,
In some ways even a god to me.
My last tie to the awesome.
When I was grown and plans had gone
awry,
He came into my life again.
As if to remind me.
And now he stood but five feet
From my reluctant form,
Too afraid to say even "hello".
I paid for that mistake with his
life.
Yes, he's dead now,
A cruel Christmas present to me,
But also a reminder.
Not to give in. Not to give up.
Never mind the practical.
Defy the nay-sayers.
I love astronomy like he loved it:
With all my soul.
My path is not as easy as his,
But maybe longer.
I have hit detours,
But I can never give up.
To do so would be to deceive
myself.
To kill myself.
Do not ask me again.
May I never forget what Carl Sagan has taught
me.
Because there's no one left to teach
it
Anymore.
(Not the most profound statement, admittedly, but that's why you didn't have to pay good money to read it.)
