TYB Books -- Sanskrit

TYB Books -- Main Page

Sanskrit is one of those languages that tests the mettle of aynone attempting to learn it.  Succeed, and succeed at any other language you could try (except maybe Chinese).  Fail, and well, at least you have a better excuse than failing at French.  Most of these books are special orders (no New York Times Bestsellers here), the more readily available are near the top of the list.  I had no idea there were so many books on things Sanskrit.  A few of these books are only in Sanskrit, but many are with English translations, so visit the links to find out more about that specific book.

Sanskrit is a language in the Indo-Aryan Branch of Indo-European.  Knowledge of Sanskrit is essential to piecing Proto Indo-European (PIE) back together.  Where Classical Greek is very conservative with the vowel system of PIE, Sanskrit is very conservative with the consonant system.  Sanskrit also represents a major body of literature that parallels Greek and Latin in its scope and depth.  There is even talk of bringing Classical Sanskrit back as the official language of India, so despite its age, it still has many contemporary applications.  For more information about PIE or other classical languages, see some of my other pages listed below.
